Robert Aswani

Robert Aswani is a self-taught artist who works in watercolors, acrylics and watercolor ink. As a young child he would accompany his mother to the market. Little did he know that the faces and scenes his young eyes absorbed would become the focus of his work. Complex and colorful market scenes are his favorite subjects. Aswani generally works with acrylics highlighted by watercolor ink to achieve the intense coloration he is well-known for. He enjoys experimenting with various styles according to the subject matter. This comes out clearly when painting wildlife scenes, where often the animals are portrayed in vivid color, and sometimes the subject of fantasy imagination. It is not uncommon to have a pink giraffe or a green ostrich, but somehow, the rendition results in total harmony and charm. This technique is totally unique to Aswani, one that he has developed over a span of 20 years. As for his market scenes and wash day paintings, in his own words:

“I love painting market scenes because I am immediately transported back to my childhood where nothing was clear. Colors intermingled and moods changed. People moved so quickly you could only capture their face for a split-second. The market is art in motion.”

Wash day paintings have featured more recently. “That group of people will always qualify for portrayal in my paintings. I have been observing women do laundry every weekend, for the past few years, hence wash day paintings.”
“My latest muse is making my paintings smile or laugh. l am now doing flowery skies to induce laughter in my paintings!!!”
