Ethnic Jewellery

Ethnic Jewellery - Contemporary Maasai Jewellery

The Masai of Kenya are a proud nomadic culture. They are a highly decorated people and are famous for their colourful glass beadwork, strung together onto cloth, wire, leather and even wood.

They originally used 6 colours - White, Red, Dark Blue or Black, Green, Orange and Light Blue. It used to be possible to recognize different clans from the colour combinations of their ornaments, but as time goes by, colour combinations are changing to suit the tastes of the modern wearer.

Both young and old, men and women wear beaded ornaments around the head, neck, ears, wrists and ankles. Women's skirts and cloaks worn by both men and women are decorated with beads. Calabashes, bags and stools are also decorated with beads.
